Where to catch brown trout
The best wild brown trout fishing in Europe is found on rivers with stable, cold and clean water. Three regions stand out:
- Bosnia & Herzegovina — Una, Ribnik and Pliva. Limestone (chalkstream-like) rivers with huge insect life and strong wild fish. The Ribnik is a classic spring creek: slow, clear and technical, famous for dry-fly fishing. The Una is bigger water with pocket runs, deep pools and trophy potential.
- Slovenia — Soča valley and Sava Bohinjka. Alpine rivers with turquoise glacial water. Brown trout share the river with the famous marble trout and grayling. Sight-fishing in gin-clear water is the norm here.
- Poland — San river. A tailwater below the Solina dam with steady flows and temperatures all season, which makes it one of the most reliable trout and grayling fisheries in Central Europe.

Techniques and gear
Fly fishing is the classic approach: dry flies during hatches, nymphs the rest of the day. A 9 ft rod in #4–5 covers most European trout rivers. On bigger water like the Una, streamer fishing moves the largest fish. Where rules allow, ultralight spin fishing with single-hook lures is also effective.
Most Balkan trout rivers are catch-and-release or have strict limits — barbless hooks are commonly required. Your guide arranges the daily licence, which in Bosnia and Slovenia is typically bought per river, per day.
