Where to catch grayling

• Bosnia: Una and Ribnik. Two of Europe's finest wild grayling rivers. Spring-creek clarity, huge insect life and fish that average well above the European norm.
• Slovenia: Soča valley. Turquoise alpine water with free-rising grayling in the long glides, plus marble trout in the deeper pools.
• Poland: San river. A cold tailwater below the Solina dam with steady flows and technical dry-fly fishing that draws anglers from across the continent.

Techniques and gear

Long leaders, fine tippets and accurate casts are the baseline. Dry flies during hatches, nymphs the rest of the day. A 9 ft rod in #3–5 covers most grayling water.

Local guides arrange daily river licences and know which beat is fishing best that week. On technical spring creeks, that knowledge saves a blank.
