Where to catch zander

• Mazury Lakes, Poland. Deep connected lakes with classic zander habitat: drop-offs, channel edges and sandy flats. Boat fishing at dusk is the local speciality.
• Sweden. Large lakes and some Baltic-connected waters hold strong zander stocks. Softbaits and vertical jigging around structure are the go-to methods.
• Central European rivers and reservoirs. Slow lowland rivers, canals and dams from Poland to the Balkans produce fish that see less angling pressure than famous western venues.

Techniques and gear

Softbaits, vertical jigging and slow trolling along depth changes are the European standards. Thin braid, a sensitive rod and a fluorocarbon leader help detect light bites.

A guide with boat and electronics shortens the learning curve on big water. Zander move with baitfish, and being on the right contour at the right light is everything.
