Where to catch Atlantic salmon
- Norway — Trøndelag rivers. The Gaula and Orkla near Trondheim are the classic big-fish rivers: fly-only beats, June multi-sea-winter salmon over 10 kg, and a fishing culture built around the midnight sun. The Namsen adds harling (boat fishing) for those who prefer covering water.
- Sweden — Mörrum and the northern rivers. Mörrumsån in the south is legendary for huge Baltic salmon on the fly. Up north, the wild Torne, Kalix and Byske rivers get some of the strongest salmon runs left in Europe, peaking around midsummer.
- Denmark — Skjern Å. Western Jutland's restored salmon river produces fish over a metre every season from spring onwards — a genuine conservation success story.
- Baltic trolling — Bornholm. In late winter and spring, boats out of Bornholm troll the open Baltic for salmon that average far bigger than most rivers produce. A different game entirely, and very effective.

Techniques, gear and rules
On the rivers, two-handed fly rods (13–15 ft, #8–10) with sink-tip lines are standard; spin fishing with spoons and wobblers is allowed on many Scandinavian beats. Trolling uses downriggers, flasher-and-fly or big spoons.
Salmon fishing is the most regulated fishing in Europe: beat bookings, daily quotas, mandatory release of large females on many rivers, and disinfection certificates for gear entering Norway. A local guide handles every one of those details — and on a salmon river, knowing which pool holds running fish today is worth more than any fly in your box.
