Halibut fishing in Europe

For most European anglers, real halibut fishing means northern Norway. Deep fjords, cold Atlantic water and fish that can outgrow anything else you will fight from a boat.

Where to catch halibut

Northern Norway. Waters around Sørøya, Havøysund and the wider Finnmark and Troms coast are the European hotspot. Specimens over 100 kg are landed every season.
Lofoten and Vesterålen. Strong sea fishing for big flatfish alongside cod and coalfish. Best with a local skipper who already knows the productive banks.
Deep fjord edges. Steep drop-offs and current seams concentrate baitfish. This is boat fishing with heavy gear, not shore casting.

Techniques and gear

Heavy spinning or boat rods, strong braid and large softbaits, jigs or natural baits are the tools. Fighting a big halibut is a team effort, and proper handling on deck matters for release.

Sea fishing in the Norwegian ocean requires no licence, but you need a boat, electronics and local marks. A guide multiplies your chance of a true trophy.
