Soča Valley, Slovenia

Probably the most beautiful trout river in Europe. The Soča's unreal turquoise water runs beneath the Julian Alps and holds a fish found nowhere else at this scale: the marble trout.

The fishing

Marble trout are the crown jewel: a native species that grows over a metre long in the Soča system. Most encounters are with fish of 40–60 cm, but every cast into a deep green pool carries the possibility of something huge. Sight-fishing in water this clear is equal parts thrilling and humbling. The fish see you long before you see them.

Grayling and rainbow trout fill the day between marble-trout chances. The Soča's grayling rise freely in the long glides, and the tributaries (Tolminka, Idrijca, Bača) are intimate waters where a careful angler can have a valley to himself.

When to go

Practical information

Getting there: Fly to Ljubljana (1.5 h), Venice or Trieste (2 h). The valley towns of Bovec, Kobarid and Tolmin are the fishing hubs.
Permits: Daily licences per zone, sold by the local angling clubs. Premium beats cost more but are strictly managed. Guides handle all of it.
Rules: Catch-and-release on most prime water, single barbless hooks, fly only in many zones.
Combine it: Non-fishing partners have plenty here: the valley is a hiking, rafting and history destination in its own right.
