The freshwater apex predator. From Poland's endless Mazury lake systems to brackish Baltic bays in Sweden, Europe offers some of the best trophy pike water in the world, and most of it is best fished from a boat with someone who knows it.
Where to catch pike
- Mazury Lakes, Poland. Over 2,000 connected lakes in northeast Poland. Weed lines, drop-offs and reed bays built for predator fishing. Healthy pike stocks alongside zander and perch make it an ideal multi-species boat destination.
- Swedish Baltic archipelagos. Brackish-water pike grow big and fight hard. Thousands of islands around Stockholm and the east coast; pre-spawn spring fishing in shallow bays is world famous.
- Rivers and backwaters across Central Europe. Slow lowland rivers, oxbows and reservoirs in Poland, Croatia and Bosnia all hold pike that see far less pressure than Western European waters.

Techniques and gear
Casting with jerkbaits, swimbaits and big soft lures is the standard; trolling covers water on the big lakes, and fly fishing for pike with 8–10 weight rods has a devoted following. A wire or heavy fluorocarbon leader is non-negotiable.
Pike are fragile in warm water despite their ferocity, good guides carry proper unhooking mats, long pliers and release big females quickly. If you want a trophy photo, a guide with a boat, sonar and local waypoints will multiply your chances many times over.
